We keep hearing that Australian businesses need to become more productive. But what does that actually mean if you’re running an SME?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Australia’s productivity performance is concerning. Labour productivity growth has averaged just 0.4% over the past decade, the lowest rate of growth in 60 years, and while Australians are working more hours, the value of what we’re producing isn’t increasing at the same rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For business owners, that’s happening against an already difficult backdrop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Business NSW June 2026 Business Conditions Survey provides a sobering picture of the pressure on NSW businesses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 59% have seen their costs rise by at least 10%
\u2013 48% of business owners have cut their own income
\u2013 37% have dipped into personal savings to keep their business running
\u2013 18% have considered shutting their business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So what does becoming \u2018more productive\u2019 actually look like for an SME that is already working incredibly hard?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We think part of the answer lies in creating more value from the resources, customers, knowledge and technology businesses already have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Use AI to increase capability, not just cut costs. Saving a few hours on routine tasks is useful. But the bigger opportunity is using AI to analyse customer behaviour, interrogate data, improve sales and marketing decisions, personalise communications and give a small team capabilities that previously required much greater resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Get more value from the customers you already have. Growth doesn’t always have to start with finding more customers. Better use of CRM data, stronger customer communication, cross-selling, retention and a deeper understanding of what existing customers value can unlock considerable potential from the customer base already there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Build a brand people actively choose. When margins are being squeezed, competing primarily on price becomes increasingly difficult. A strong brand, clear value proposition and genuine differentiation give customers a reason to choose one business over another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Make your marketing investment work harder. This doesn’t necessarily mean spending less. It means understanding which customers and markets are most valuable, integrating channels, improving conversion and being prepared to stop activity that produces plenty of numbers but little commercial return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And don’t overlook culture. Technology can make people faster but it doesn’t automatically make a business better. People who understand what the business is trying to achieve are empowered to improve the way things are done and are encouraged to experiment with new technology can create a very different productivity outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For businesses already working harder and absorbing increasing costs, productivity isn’t about asking people to work even harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s about finding smarter ways to turn all that hard work into greater value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
